..so for all the people who have trouble cooking the paste, here's a little tut..

HOW TO COOK IT

you need:

* hot plate and a little pot
* beater (or fork)
* flour (white, preferably)
* water
* sugar

..so here's how to do it:

:: take 3 tablespoons of flour

:: add cold water and stir, until it's a runny mix

:: put one cup of water in your pot, heat it until it's almost boiling.

:: put the cold wheat-water-mix in it slowly while stirring constantly with the beater/fork. (leave the pot on the hot plate while doing this)

::bring to boil (just for a minute or so)

:: keep stirring!!

that's it.

if you want, you can add a tablespoon of (white) sugar while it's still hot, for extra strenght.

bon appetit !

HOW TO USE IT

paste is applied (both to surface and backside of your poster) with a thick brush (the bigger the poster, the bigger the brush), from the center to the edges.

use regular paper you'd use in your printer, or any paper / stuff that is able to kinda absorb the paste a bit.

take care to eliminate air bubbles under the poster by striking from the center to the edge, and make sure there's enough paste at the edges / corners.

have fun !

It's used to put up posters and other pieces of paper, It works simialr to wall paper, but is used for political posters more often then not.

after 2 days (room temperature) it starts smelling (but it's still usable)
best thing is to cook it when you need it, or put it in the fridge maybe. i always threw away my leftovers since it's cheap and easy to just cook freh stuff.

can it be like sprayed on, with one of thoes water sprayer things, like when you get your hair cut, they wet it?

i never tried that - but there are people (mutiny for example) who do it, so it seems to work. i like to cook mine rather thick and use a fat brush cuz it's easy to 'brush it to the wall' and get all the air beneath the poster out that way.

happy pasting!

and for all of you in the colder regions of the world...

I suggest not adding salt to your wheatpaste to keep it from freezing. It will keep it from freezing, but that doesn't mean it will dry. I made a small mix of wheatpaste and salt to test it out... and the poster was still soggy a week later (i'm not even kidding). The temperature was just below or just above freezing all week.

BUT, what does work is wood glue. It's about 10 dollars for a gallon at a hardware store. It might seem kindof expensive but, damn, it works. I made a mix of about 12 cups of wheatpaste and used about 1/3 of a gallon of wood glue (4 cups?), and that worked extremely well. It was probably more than i even needed. I'd suggest using 1 cup of wood glue for every 5 cups of wheatpaste you have.

Also, remember to add it last minute or after you've put it into your container. Otherwise the glue will bond to the bottom of your pot and you'll have a happy time scrubbing that shit out. Trust me.

Can you get it off if you need to (water or petrol or something)?
Do you go over the poster too (i saw that in a movie or something)?
What is the dry time?

Or is the only benifit the fact that it is dirt cheap?

off of the wall? no. out of your clothes? somewhat. i have the same outfit i go bombing with every time

yes

What is the dry time?

a few hours? dunno. overnight. I never stick around for very long - but they're always down pretty solidly the next morning for photos. I'd give them an hour and a half, 20 minutes in the sun?

that and it's pretty strong. a lot of people recommend wallpaper paste, which is cheap as well, but not as strong. You're not going to get anything much stronger for very cheap.

and that it's really easy to make.

Make sure the layer on top is fairly thin and not lumpy or it shall not dry and the buffer man will come and buff buff buff it away!

Thanks for the good tutorial!

There is only one (or maybe two) things I didn´t get (and I don´t know an artist round here to ask) :
How do you get your stickers on a wall? First you paint the wall with wheatpaste, then you add the poster and then you again put some wheatpaste on the poster???
And do you use a big paintbrush for that (like professional painters have, they are about 30 cm broad)?

Sorry, but I´m new in real posters, until now I only did this postal-sticker-thing...

cheers, the_prince

yeah, you smear the paste down, put the poster on it, and put a thin layer of paste on top. I use a 4 inch brush and it works fine for smaller stuff, but it's a pain in the ass with bigger things.

side note about sugar

i belonged to the group of people that thought putting sugar in the paste was necessary..

..but now (after running out of sugar, cooking paste without it, and putting up stuff outside at temperatures around zero that stick like fucking hell) i think it's a superstitious thing. i even tried to scrape off one of them myself cuz i didn't like the placement and it was pretty impossible.
i think adding sugar maybe adds to the 'paste smelling like chinatown-effect' as well, so i'll keep on cooking w/out it i think..

(MorningJoe)
...and the poster was still soggy a week later (i'm not even kidding). The temperature was just below or just above freezing all week.

..hmm, i really don't know why, but i never had problems like that ('cept for one time, when it was some degrees below zero and i tried to paste on a metal-waterpipe .. but on walls .. it always dried 'til next morning (night temp. between 0 and -10°C)
maybe it's because i always cook my paste rather thick, and really brush it down hard.

good luck to y'all..

i do it pretty thick as well... but that was because of the massive amounts of salt i put in it. It was on a metal dumpster, as well.

Put the paste down on the wall or whatever first, lay your poster on, smooth it our or whatever. Some people say that their paste doesnt dry clear, but mine does (maybe its because i make it with reg. flour not wheat flour?), so I put paste over top of the poster as well. Just make sure you dont put it on too thick or it wont dry! Then the buffaman will have an easy time of taking it down.

you can use anything, really. Hands work pretty well, but it's quite the mess. Those big wallpaper brushes seem pretty popular, but i've never used one. I have a 4" brush that i got for something like 2 dollars, and it works great.
