Van Gogh is a post impressionist artist born in the Netherlands. Strangely Vincent’s parents had a still birth 1 year prior they named “Vincent” as well. He lived tormented life which eventually led to his suicide at the age of 37. Van Gogh struggled with serious mental illness which at the time there was no proper treatment for. Throughout his short life his work was never popular and rejected for his style. He later became recognized as the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. Van Gogh struggled with his illness and being attracted to troubled women. Many people know the story of van Gogh cutting off his own ear but they do not know why the artist did this. Historic accounts say that he attempted to give his ear to a prostitute and telling her to “keep the object carefully”. Many other peculiar events occurred in Van Gogh’s life as a result of his unmedicated condition. Although he never sold much of his work during his life, some of his paintings went on to sell for record amounts over $50 million. Unfortunately van Gogh didn’t live long enough to see the success and praise his work would receive but it will undoubtably continue to be some of the most valuable art in the world.
