Banksy is probably the best-known street artist in the world ” and yet few people actually know anything at all about him as a person. And perhaps that’s the way it should be. An artist’s work must ” in the end ” stand alone and be judged on its own merits.

Banksy has given us a wealth of material by which to judge him. Most of his paintings are sarcastic, sardonic, or, at the very least, humorous. They all make us think about the world around us, our place in it, and about some of the more absurd things we, as humans, do every single day.

Pantomime Guard on Horse is one of Banksy’s more whimsical pieces. And it is one of his more detailed and realistic pieces of art; it demonstrates that Banksy is above all an actual artist ” albeit one with a decidedly bizarre sense of humor. The guard is depicted in wonderful detail and the horse that he sits on at first blush may appear to be a normal horse…until one begins looking more closely and sees that the body of the horse is only a costume, concealing (presumably) two men pretending to be a horse.
